A former NHIS Neurosurgeon has claimed that within ten (10) years from now it will be possible to change the human head. Isn’t this bewilderment?
Doctor Bruce Mathew, said advance in robotics, stem cell transplant and nerve surgery would make it possible to transfer human brain and spinal cord within two bodies.
The former Clinical Head at Hull University Teaching Hospitals, England, said, it would be possible to do a head transplant within this specified period of time.
The Surgeon developed the idea while working on a surgical science fiction novel about immortal potentials with futurist author Michael Lee, titled ‘Chrysalis”.
The Telegraph, quoted him as saying “initially our attention was just to brainstorm an idea and it seem really silly, but then I realized it isn’t.
“If you transplant the brain and keep the brain and spinal together, it’s actually not impossible.
He described the experiment by saying “you would take of the spinal column so that you could drop the whole brain and spinal cord and lumbar sacral into a new body.
“It’s very difficult to take off the dura (the protective covering of the spinal cord) intact without creating a hole in it. It will take a number of advancement but it will probably happen in the next 10years, he noted.
Dr. Mathew, revealed that the first human head exchange on dead bodies has already been done, “The first human head transplant on human cadavers has been done, a full human head swap between brain dead donors is the next stage”, he said.
This medical procedure could benefit people suffering from muscular dystrophy, amputees, and even bring back the dead.
Dr Xiaoping Ren managed to transplant a head into a dead monkey’s body in 2017.
Two years ago, Russian computer scientist Valery Spiridonov, who suffered from muscular dystrophy, volunteered to become the first head transplant.
However, the research did not get support in Europe and the US due to ethical concerns, but was welcomed in china.
Consequently, in 2017, a head swap between two dead bodies was performed in Harbin Medical University China, the spin, nerves and blood vessels where reconstructed in an 18hours operation.
Italian neurologist Dr. Serigio Canaero, chief of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, also working with Dr,Ren, is planning on investigating an approach involving separating the brain from the spinal cord, by cutting the connection with a diamond blade and then freeing it before connecting it to a new body.
