A gynecologist has advised females to desist from having many sex partners and premature or early sexual intercourse in other to avoid the risk of developing cervical cancer.
Adetola Olatunji, who is also an obstetrician, gave the warning during a lecture titled “Female Reproductive Structure and Function, Ban of Women in Developing Countries” at Olabisi Onabanjo’s university, Ogun state.
The professor of Medicine warned that the infection is sexually transmitted, adding that it has been found in about 99% of tumor that occur in the cervix.
He identified the microorganism that causes this lethal infection as Human Papiloma Virus (HPV).
Citing world Health Organization (WHO) recommendation, said that teens (boy and girl) between the age of 11 and 12 should be vaccinated against the virus before they begin their sexual life.
He warned that early intercourse will expose them to HPV infection and it subsequent transmission to the female genitalia by the male.
Doctor Adetola, said that tumor of the cervix can be prevented if detected early, he therefore urged women to always go for screening.
He revealed that cervical screening is inexpensive, and can be done at a low cost of #500 (five hundred naira), at Olabisi Onabanjo’s University (OOUTH)Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun sState.
He expresses displeasure that despite cervical cancer being preventable, cases has been presented for treatment in advanced stages, when little or no success could be made.
The expert extended his lecture to uterine fibroid (Myoma), and advised women who have it to seek medical treatment from gynecologist, and desist from living under the illusion that there are remedies that can expel this benign cancer through the anus like feces.
